From my point of view, however, the bigger problem is just the opposite. Too many Broadway shows these days — mostly straight plays, but some musicals as well— are steeped in a New York state of mind, overly obsessed with the experiences, issues and in-jokes of the home-town crowd. Two good bad new examples have just arrived. It has been 20 years since her son died from AIDS, but Katharine is still dripping with bitterness and resentment — not just over his death, but over the fact that Cal has moved on and is now married to another man, with whom he is raising a six-year-old son. The play is both didactic and dated, as it contrives to make familiar points about the prejudice still faced by gay people, even as the AIDS crisis has faded and gay marriage become the law of much of the land. But none of the actors have much luck trying to inhabit these cardboard characters, set up by a playwright preaching to the local choir. Created by the same team behind Next to Normal , winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical, it tells the story of Elizabeth, a thirtysomething divorcee, who arrives in New York from Phoenix to start a new life. Actually, two lives. In an alternative life, she misses out on the city-planning job, becomes a teacher and winds up marrying an Army doctor. The gimmick is that we watch both her parallel lives unfold simultaneously.
Idina Menzel Wicked, Rent, Frozen, Glee lights up the stage with a versatile and passionate performance. However, it wasn’t until the second act that the music became stronger in melody and flow. She’s taken on an important city planning job and is ready to build her career and independence. But, as fate would have it, romance shows up. The show asks the unanswerable question, “What would happen if you did this instead of that? While switching between two storylines could cause some confusion, Grief’s direction, Wendland’s sets, Peter Nigrini ‘s projection design and Kenneth Posner ‘s lighting allow the audience to easily weave from Beth’s life to Liz’s.

And indeed, Menzel and her three co-leads all stayed for the entire yearlong run.
Top 20 January arts events around Phoenix. I have ownership over this. The show was written by the team of Tom Kitt music and Brian Yorkey book and lyrics. It was an idea of working together, an outline on paper. So it was about working with them.
And playing a complicated, multidimensional woman is always what I want to play. James Snyder revisits his a cappella roots with In Transit
Elizabeth has just arrived in New York — which, in Broadway-speak, means her life can finally begin. She is pushing 40, clock ticking but job offers are rolling in, and she finds herself surrounded by angst-ridden others, all dealing with the anguish of so many choices for the highly educated, deftly networked and amply resourced. Elizabeth’s twin journeys — one as Liz, one as Beth, to help us keep track — unspool at once, scenes alternating cleverly before they finally connect, like the closed end of a once-forked road.

By Elisabeth Vincentelli. Richard Rodgers Theatre, W. Running time: minutes, one intermission. The star holds this ambitious but unwieldy show together. Actually, she does more than that: She gathers a bunch of messy parts, and gives them life, emerging triumphant in the process. Based on the idea that each choice leads to a separate life path, the show imagines parallel courses for Elizabeth, with Menzel toggling between two halves of her whole: Liz and Beth. Liz is the kind of woman who follows her heart and dates Josh James Snyder , a handsome war veteran who impulsively asked her out in a park.
